Field Tested Premade Rigs and Leaders
All our premade leaders are handmade and made in the U.S.A. Ourl fishing leaders and rigs have been tested and tuned for the following types of fish in the Gulf of Mexico and Southeastern U.S.:
- King Fish: King fish (king mackerel) are a highly sought after game fish. They are a challenging catch that put up a spectacular fight by leaping and sky rocketing out of the water. They hook on both live or dead bait and also using artificial lures when trolling. They can be caught from shore or pier, from a boat at anchor, drifting or trolling. Our CrazyHooks rigs are set up to for drifting boats, especially using live baits, as well as for using dead baits at oil rigs and near structures. King fish have a set of nasty pointed teeth for grabbing up front, and jagged, razor sharp teeth for cutting on the sides. Therefore, test lines of at least 200 lb. leaders are required but CrazyHook's 300 and 400 lb. leader rigs are highly recommended.
- Red Snapper: Red snappers and other fish in the snapper family (lane snappers and vermillion snappers) are a prized food fish and are caught commercially, as well as recreationally. Commercially, they are caught on multi-hook gear with electric reels. Red snappers can be found near structures and oil rigs in state water as well as in federal water. Although large snappers, the true giants, are often found in deep water, anglers can also find large snappers near underwater structures that are not visibly seen by most anglers. Most red snappers can be caught using CrazyHooks' 200 lb. leaders; but, for the true giants, you will increase your chances using CrazyHook's 300 or 400 lb. leader, premade fishing rigs in accompanying with our No. 9 circle hooks.s
- Amberjacks: Amberjacks (AJ) are extremely powerful fish and are noted for their ability to leave anglers worn down and arm-weary after just one encounter. Amberjacks can reach 60 to 70 pounds but can attain weights well over the 100-pound mark. Such hefty fish require tackle, rigging, baits and lures suited to their immense power. We recommend that you use steel leaders of at least 120 lb. test line or mono leaders of at least 300 to 400 lb. test line. To increase your chances of success, we recommend using at least 120 lb. or 150 lb. main lines and our 400 lb. leaders premade deep sea fishing rigs. When you are close to structures, you will need to reel them in as quickly as possible to avoid your lines being cut against sharp coral and sunken ships.
- Grouper: Groupers are hard-fighting fish and are fine food fish. The meat is prized by anglers because of its high fat/oil content that keeps the fish moist regardless of one's cooking method. As a sporting fish, groupers very strong and will give you a hard fight and possibly only amberjacks fight harder than a large grouper. When fishing for groupers, CrazyHooks' premade Carolina rigs, using 12-16 oz egg-sinkers, 300 to 400 lb. leaders, 120 to 150 lbs main line, with no. 9 circle hooks or larger is recommended. To up the chances of landing a large grouper, many anglers will reel in the prized fish as quickly as possible in an effort to avoid their line being cut by rocks, coral, or by underwater structures. This technique, however, raises the chance of snapping their main line due to the increased tension placed on the line.
- Ling (Cobia): Lings are prized game fish that are hard-fighting and excellent eating fish. Lings, also known as cobia or lemon fish, are heavy fish that never seem to give up the battle even after they're boated. Average size of this fish seems to be over 25 lbs with 35-40 lbs not uncommon and can reach 65 lbs in the Gulf of Mexico and even larger in the Atlantic Ocean. Lings are often mistaken by anglers for sharks because of their dark brown coloration on top, light brown at the bottom, and spiked dorsal fins. Lings can be seen swimming near the surface near floating oil rigs or close to underwater structures. Oddly enough, some lings swim along with other predatory fish, such as king mackerel and sharks. Their meat is excellent eating, with fluffy white flesh that are great on the grill, pan fried, or deep fried.
- Red Drum: Red drums (red fish) are fun to catch and are excellent food fish. Reds bite hard and fight hard, especially bull reds (28 inches and bigger). Reds like to run near structures, especially close to jetties in the bay. For that reason, bull reds often time will run close to the rocks after being hooked. Because of that, CrazyHook's bull red leaders are at least 80 lb. to 120 lb. steal leaders or 200 lb mono leaders. We recommend that you use mono lines of at least 30 lb. or braided lines of at least 50 lbs. in combination with our steel leaders. Don't trust your prized bull red with a commercialized rig from sporting good stores that are cheaply made in China. Our premade rigs are all hand cranked and are made in the U.S.A.
- Black Drum: Black drums (drums) are in the same family as red drums; and, so are its lesser cousins such as croakers, sand seatrouts, whitings and gulf-whitings. Like red drums, however, black drums can grow to enormous proportion. Some bull drums can get to 45 in. or more, weighing more than 35 lbs. In Texas, as in many other gulf-coast states, black drums are only permitted to be kept from 14 in. - 28 in. This is because bull drums tend to have a lot of parasitic worms that burry in the animal's flesh and live off of the fish's flesh. Nevertheless, the meat of black drums is white, fluffy, and moist, making it one of angler's favorite game fish.
- Sharks: Most offshore anglers do not intend to fish for sharks. However, some sharks are very good eating, such as black-tip sharks. The meat is white and firm, similar to mahi mahi (dolphins, the fish). Further, if you like the sport and love the fight, few fish fight harder than a big shark, such as a 9-11 feet bull shark or a 6-7 feet black tip shark. To reel in a big shark for a picture-perfect snap, you will need leaders ranging from 200 lbs to 400 lbs that are at least 4-6 feet long and using a circle hooks from at least a number 7 or larger.
- Wahoo: Wahoo's speed and high quality flesh make it a prized catch in sport fishing. Techniques to catch this include fishing offshore and using heavy tackle (preferably CrazyHooks) and trolling.
